Finally, a down day!

It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way. — Rollo May

I was shocked to discover, upon waking up and checking my calendar, that I had NOTHING scheduled for today. Sure, plenty to do (there is always writing that needs to be done, and house-hold chores), but still. Nothing scheduled? How… nice. So, on this day of pseudo-rest (as I will be working, cleaning, and running errands, but in a leisurely manner), I can reflect on this crazy-busy week behind me. Beginning with Sunday morning, when I visited KUSI to chat with the lovely Kristen Cusato. That was fun. I had no idea they were going to show one of my videos, and my family actually took it in stride, especially Jenny, whose tongue was highlighted. My niece, Bella, was ecstatic to see herself on TV, and asked that Nana rewind it so she could relish the moment over and over. Must be hereditary. Monday was Memorial Day, and after working for a handful of hours, a small crew and I went to our friend Sara’s house for a bar-b-cue with a bunch of restaurant industry folks, including the chef and some staff from one of our favorite restaurants in town. Tuesday I did actually have plans to do one thing, but ended up doing another, and for the life of me, because it’s not on my calendar, I can’t freakin’ remember. No matter. Because Wednesday was the big web site launch party for the Reader! And there are a bunch of pictures from the event RIGHT HERE. And Josh Board wrote a little crasher-like blog update about it HERE.

The party turned out to be a lot of fun, when I got my hands on the microphone (a handful of times throughout the evening as I was rewarding raffle prizes and the like), I said all the things I’m not allowed to write, in FRONT of the man who told me I’m not allowed to write them, and it was exhilarating, because I’m a bad girl at heart. It was like turrets, I couldn’t help myself. I got that mike in my hand and I was like, “Pussy! I can’t write the word pussy, so I’m just going to say it a few times,” and “Oh, and ass-fucking! I’m not allowed to make any references to ass-fucking, but those are the only two things, and that’s not bad!” The head honcho, publisher of the Reader (there with his lovely wife) was a great sport. He laughed at my antics and afterwards, made a point to tell me how well I handled the mike. I’m sure he wanted to say, “Despite the offensive bits, of course.” Anyway, I met so many wonderful people, and I was honored and flattered and humbled by how many of them came to the party hoping to meet me. One couple even drove up from TJ to say hello to me in person! I’m still reeling from that. How unbelievably rewarding, to meet some of the folks who enjoy my work. We stayed until around 10 and then David and I paired up with some good friends and went to Starlite for some tasty late-night snacks.

Thursday night we were entertained and intellectually stimulated by the fabulous and talented Josh Kornbluth. His new monologue is called “Citizen Josh,” and it is about democracy. I suggest you read through his web site and blog, because there’s a lot of fun and thought-provoking stuff on there. On the way out, we picked up his book, Red Diaper Baby. After the show, we checked out a fairly new restaurant downtown, Bottega de’La Strada. Not the best, not the worst, and we had an enjoyable enough meal (though my spaghetti sauce was bland, the salad and bruschetta were flavorful). God, if Charlie my old trainer knew how often I’ve been eating out, he’d slap me on the back of the head. Finally, we have Friday (speaking of eating out). I went to Solare Ristorante in Point Loma, and WOW! I’m looking forward to taking some more friends there, it was a great experience and the food was divine. The service was perhaps the best I have experienced in San Diego.

And now we are at today, Saturday, the day with no plans. My sister Heather just called, looks like they’re bar-b-cuing, and that sounds like a lot of fun. Yesterday I got my eyes checked out, and today I’m going to walk over there and purchase some new frames. Coincidentally, I learned after trying a bunch on that the sunglasses I chose are named “Divas.” So some new glasses are in the cards, though my prescription hasn’t changed in nearly a decade. However, I need WEAKER glasses for all my computer work. All those afternoon headaches and sensitivity to light, apparently, have to do with the fact that my glasses are too strong for such a close screen, and my eyes are working and straining harder than they have to. More on this later, I might do a diary about it, because there’s a lot of story behind having four eyes. Tomorrow? Plans! After working all day, I will attend a friend’s house “cooling” party, and I’m looking forward to it, and to all the things on the iPhone calendar that I’ve scheduled for the next few weeks, before we fly out to Boston for David’s annual show on Martha’s Vineyard. Yes, having a down day is quite nice indeed.
